Comparison sites not right for annuities, says Sun Life Financial of Canada

Sun Life Financial of Canada has suggested that it would be unsuitable for consumers to shop around for their annuity options on a comparison site.

Mark Stopard, head of marketing at the firm, stressed that it is important for people to look for the best deal and such sites have underlined the potential for saving money by doing so.

However, this does not mean that a comparison website is suitable for looking for the ideal annuity, since a degree of expertise is necessary to make sure it is the right fit for the customer in question, he noted.

"Getting the timing, shape and need for flexibility in a retirement income is much more important than just bagging the cheapest deal," said Mr Stopard.

This month, Sun Life Financial of Canada unveiled the first Unretirement index in Britain, which measures the "confidence, concerns and expectations" felt by consumers regarding retirement plans.
