Author of the study and insight analyst for general insurance at the research organisation Mike Powell explained that it can often be an "expensive mistake" if consumers simply opt for the cheapest option.
He said: "Although the cost of any insurance product is an important factor when deciding which policy to buy, the cover provided should always be the main consideration."
Mr Powell pointed out that it can be hugely disappointing for a person who has taken out an insurance policy to realise that they are not protected against all threats, particularly if this issue gets in the way of a claim.
Last week, he advised drivers that they should check their policy carefully to ensure that they have all the features that they need for their circumstances.
