High interest savings account provider Co-operative notes importance of trust

The Co-operative Bank has revealed that 54 per cent of Britons believe they are less trusting than they were 12 months ago.

According to a new survey from the company, politicians belong to the most distrusted profession in the country, followed closely by bankers.

Other vocations likely to invoke suspicion include journalists, car salesmen and estate agents.

The findings cited the recession, poor service levels and society becoming more selfish as the main reasons for the recent decline in trust among UK people.

John Hughes, business leader of retail products at the Co-operative, described the outcome of the survey as "very unsettling".

He added: "For the sake of economic stability, it's imperative that the British public has confidence in its government, financial services sector and the housing market."

Mr Hughes said people who do not trust their bank should make the effort to shop around for a provider they feel happy with.

Last month, the Co-operative announced plans to encourage "ethical spending" by cutting interest rates on its Think credit card.
