More people seeking debt relief after bereavement, says CCCS

A growing number of people are seeking debt relief following the death of a loved one, a charity has revealed.

According to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), many Britons are having to deal with the debts of people who have recently died, such as a spouse or a parent.

However, the charity said lots of these people are struggling to pay off the debts and are therefore looking for advice and support.

Laura Carver, the head of the CCCS helpline, recommended that those in this situation get in touch with their creditors to tell them about their changed circumstances, as most will be sympathetic.

"Bereavement is difficult enough but finding that you have to deal with debt makes it that much harder," she commented.

The CCCS has also recommended that families plan ahead so they are prepared for the financial impact of one person's death.

This comes after a poll by the charity found that more than a third of those with debt problems have seen their relationship with their partner suffer as a result.
