Motorists with 'insurance for young drivers keen to sing behind the wheel'

Motorists such as those with insurance for young drivers are keen to sing at the top of their voices when they take to the road.

According to Seat, 79 per cent of men and 65 per cent of women admit to singing loudly when driving on their own.

A study by the car manufacturer also found that people who drive alone tend to listen to different music than they would do otherwise.

Indeed, research showed that many lone males are prepared to sing along with so-called "chick hits" when they are behind the wheel.

Women, meanwhile, were found to often opt for rockier music such as The Clash or Thin Lizzy if they have no passengers in their vehicle.

Conor McNicholas, former editor of NME and Top Gear magazines, said this shows that many drivers consider their car as a place of sanctuary.

"Who hasn't given their all to a classic fist-in-the-air ballad whilst waiting for the lights to change?" he commented.

This coincides with a poll by HPI which identified Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd as the most popular summer driving song among British motorists.
