According to consumer group Which?, nearly a third of people accepted their most recent renewal quote because they did not want to spend time looking elsewhere.
However, figures from the organisation show that nearly two-thirds of those who did research the market ended up getting a lower quote.
Indeed, Which? stated that drivers who shopped around saved an average of £58.
The group has therefore encouraged people looking for cheap car insurance for young drivers to never accept the first quote they are given and even consider seeing if their existing provider will match a better quote from a rival company.
"Renewing your car insurance with your existing provider may be convenient, but our experts have found that this is one area where loyalty doesn't pay," said Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith.
This comes after Gocompare.com revealed that 12.8 million people in the UK have not switched any financial products in the last year.
