Head of car insurance at the price comparison site Steve Sweeney described it as an "alarming" situation that some drivers choose not to bother to spend a few minutes checking the price of other policies before renewing.
"Our research shows people can save £233 on average a year by scouring the market - that's nearly £100 more compared with last year," he remarked.
Mr Sweeney observed that premium prices have shot up over the past year as a result of fraudulent claims, which makes saving money on such products even more important.
In his opinion, there are now more opportunities than ever to save cash by switching car insurance providers, rather than allowing firms to auto-renew the policy.
Recently, moneysupermarket.com highlighted the importance of amending address details on insurance when a person's living situation changes.
