Mark Gregory, executive director of savings at the company, claimed that women are the "driving force" behind saving habits in British households.
He suggested ladies are more concerned by the need to meet the cost of household bills than men, although males are noticeably more worried about losing their jobs, according to research by the firm.
"Saving for luxury items such as new clothes or a night out appear further down the list, suggesting that people are perhaps putting off these things," added Mr Gregory.
A study by Legal & General showed that 40 per cent of men are saving in case they must face unemployment, while just 25 per cent of women have the same priority.
Last week, credit strategist at the firm's Investment Management arm Ben Bennett pointed out that government bond yields have been in steady decline recently and wondered when people will turn elsewhere in terms of investment.
