Insurance for young drivers provider Admiral highlights speeding issue

Admiral insurance has noted that many drivers see speed limits as loose guidelines and wondered how the conviction rate for speeding offences is not higher.

Sue Longthorn, managing director of the company, made her comments after the firm conducted research showing that one in ten motorists has been prosecuted for breaking the law in this respect.

She described it as "astonishing" that in some parts of the country more than a quarter of drivers have a speeding conviction.

The Admiral study also indicated that 87 per cent of people readily admit to breaking the speed limit.

"Our statistics show a worrying trend that people see a speed limit as simply a guide rather than a speed that's appropriate for that road," remarked Ms Longthorn.

Last month, a report by the same company indicated that more women are becoming clued up about their cars, with two in five stating they are able to change a wheel.
