Motorists should not automatically think they must sacrifice aspects of their cover to cut the price of their premium, according to Gocompare.com.

Lee Griffin, a spokesperson from the website, claimed that providers will look at applicants in different ways and may judge them to be less of a risk.

This could mean that switching to another insurance company would allow individuals to hang on to all the features of their policy they want, without needing to pay more.

"Car insurance premiums are at an all time high, but that doesn't mean drivers have to give up valuable cover to keep costs down," commented Mr Griffin.

Research by Gocompare.com indicated that 97 per cent of drivers would not switch to third-party cover from fully comprehensive in order to save cash.

Last month, the price comparison site revealed that 25 per cent of respondents to a survey admitted they need to make cutbacks to live within their means.
