Buy to let mortgage holders may benefit from education, says NLA

People who become landlords could benefit from learning more about the responsibilities they have with regards to their property, according to the National Landlords Association (NLA).

Vincenzo Rampulla, a spokesperson for the institution, suggested that tenants may also find out more about what rights they have.

He made his remarks following the publication of a study by Shelter, which indicated that 90 per cent of environmental health officers at local councils have had to deal with "rogue" landlords, who harass or illegally evict tenants.

"The real issue is that local authorities have all the powers and laws they need to deal with this issue. No further regulations or laws are needed," noted Mr Rampulla.

In his opinion, it could help matters if council representatives reviewed their engagement with landlords in general, since this could aid communication between parties.

The NLA spokesperson encouraged local authorities to take a zero-tolerance approach to dealing with landlords who do not play by the rules.
