Graduate insurance for young drivers scheme will be difficult, claims moneysupermarket.com

It may be tricky to enforce any form of graduate scheme for younger motorists, according to a senior source from moneysupermarket.com.

Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at the company, made his comments in response to an idea put forward by Cardiff University's Dr Sarah Jones, which suggested introducing Graduate Driver Licensing in the UK.

This would involve young drivers being prohibited from driving at night without assistance from more experienced motorists, among other regulations.

Mr Sweeney applauded Dr Jones for considering the issues facing youngsters who have recently learned to drive, but suggested it may not be a good idea to reduce the number of hours they spend behind the wheel.

He added: "Enforcing this system will be incredibly hard to do in practice and I don't believe it will actually keep young motorists off the roads."

This week, moneysupermarket.com advised inexperienced drivers their insurance premiums are likely to be more costly if they are caught speeding.
