Head of car insurance at the website Steve Sweeney suggested youngsters should be doing all they can to cut the cost of protection, since it can be a costly purchase.
"It's a shame car insurance premiums are based on age rather than experience, but there's no sense bumping up the cost of cover even further with a speeding conviction," he said.
According to moneysupermarket.com, people may be able to reduce the cost of policies by completing a Pass Plus certificate, limiting yearly mileage and ensuring the vehicle has an immobiliser fitted.
Mr Sweeney urged individuals to shop around for the best deal they can find, since some insurers specialise in covering younger motorists.
Last week, the same organisation urged people not to increase their voluntary excess on home insurance premiums, since it will not save as much money as many consumers think.
