Changing details on car insurance for young drivers costs cash, says Which?

Many car insurance customers are having to pay to make minor alterations to their personal details, according to new research by Which?.

Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive of the watchdog, suggested it is hard for insurance firms to justify charging clients if they only want to make a small change, such as switching their marital status.

He said: "It's about time insurance companies start treating their customers fairly and make administrative charges proportionate and transparent."

Mr Vicary-Smith noted it is almost irrelevant whether a firm is charging £30 or £85, since neither seems fair to consumers.

Research by Which? showed seven out of ten car insurance providers ask their customers to make some form or payment if they wish to make changes to the personal details listed on their policy.

Last month, the same organisation urged people to shop around for their policy when it comes to renewing it, since the company found that 60 per cent of people are able to save money this way.
