Car insurance for young drivers may not cover fuel issues, notes Defaqto

Young people should be careful when they are refuelling their cars, as their motor insurance may not cover them for any accidents, according to Defaqto.

Insight analyst for general insurance at the organisation Mike Powell claimed misfuelling is "not uncommon" and customers will often have to pay extra for their breakdown service to go and help them.

He stated that it may not only be a repair bill for the vehicle that people will face if they manage to put the wrong fuel in their car, since they may also be charged for a tow to the nearest garage.

"Our analysis found that 23 per cent of motor breakdown policies don't cover breakdown following misfuelling," added Mr Powell.

This month, the same Defaqto insurance spokesperson urged people to look at the small print of their policies if they believe they may need to cancel before the term is up, since some providers are charging as much as £85 for this.
