CCCS highlights importance of transparent debt relief

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has underlined the need for people requiring debt relief to receive independent advice.

Delroy Corinaldi, external affairs director at the institution, made his remarks in response to the publication of the Office of Fair Trading's study of debt management companies.

The report showed that there were an "unacceptable" level of instances when clear and transparent advice was not given to be people, which Mr Corinaldi pointed often applies to fee-paying services as opposed to charities.

"Being unable to maintain your debt commitments is incredibly stressful and it can be difficult to decide what to do," he said.

In his opinion, it should be noted that there are several charitable organisations that offer independent advice, which he claimed is always in the interests of the consumer.

This month, the CCCS applauded the introduction of new regulations relating to advertising practices employed by debt management companies, which it suggested will make it harder to mislead people.
