Which? fixed rate mortgage advice 'will be independent'

A representative from MyMortgageDirect has highlighted how the new mortgage advice service from Which? will offer the public an independent opinion.

Catherine Hearnden, director of MyMortgageDirect, stressed any move that brings more bias-free information to consumers is a good development.

In her opinion, it is unusual that Which? has decided to set up its own advisory service, since there are a huge number of qualified independent financial advisers in the UK.

She pointed out that the company has always recommended visiting one of these professionals in the past and this latest move could be construed as a "slur" against the industry.

But Ms Hearnden added: "The positive thing is that it opens up independent advice for more people potentially and that is never a bad thing."

This week, Which? announced that the Financial Services Authority had given the company permission to set up a mortgage advice service, which will be launched later this month.
