'Years' before buy to let mortgage lending eases, says Property Hawk

It will be years rather than months before the buy to let mortgage lending market returns to anything resembling the situation pre-2007, a representative from Property Hawk has claimed.

Editor of the advisory website Chris Horne said it is unlikely the accessibility of such funding will ease in the short term.

In his opinion, this is because banks and building societies need to develop their capital positions.

Mr Horne suggested financial institutions are gradually growing in confidence with regards to lending to landlords, but it will be a while before lending levels improve significantly.

"The mortgage market for landlords has eased over the last year and I think it will be the case that it will slowly ease, but you are probably talking of several years," he commented.

This week, the Council of Mortgage Lenders announced mortgage lending figures for the third quarter of the year, with the number of buy to let deals advanced growing 14 per cent compared with the same period of 2009.
