More youngsters set to need debt relief, says CCCS

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has warned that the number of young people seeking debt advice is likely to increase over the next few years.

A spokesperson from the financial charity cited the increase in university tuition fees and the slow jobs market as reasons for the prediction.

She revealed that eight per cent of people who go to the CCCS for help are between the ages of 18 and 25, but this figure is likely to go up in the "near future".

"It is important for people of any age, but particularly [for] young people who often have smaller incomes, to be money aware," said the charity representative.

The CCCS spokesperson stressed there has not yet been an increase in the number of calls it receives from young adults.

Citizens Advice, on the other hand, revealed it has seen a 21 per cent rise in enquiries by under-25s in the past year, although these communications relate to employment, housing and benefits, as well as debt.
