Avoid needing debt relief by getting creative, urges NS&I

NS&I has encouraged people to get creative this Christmas to avoid needing debt relief in the New Year.

Tim Mack, savings spokesman at the company, explained that consumers can cut down their festive bills by making presents themselves.

He suggested that being resourceful in this way could allow individuals to emerge from the Christmas season without as much debt, particularly if they combine this strategy with sensible budgeting.

"This is not about people dreaming of a tight Christmas, but about each of us doing a bit more planning and being a little bit more enterprising," said Mr Mack.

Research by NS&I indicated that one-third of Brits who are aiming to cut their spending over the festive period are going to do so by making some of their presents this year.

Last week, the company announced that its premium bond millionaire for December was a woman in Tyne and Wear who bought the winning product in March 2008.
