Royal Bank of Scotland credit cards offers helping hand

Royal Bank of Scotland credit cards has launched a new scheme to help customers who have become the victim of identity theft or card fraud.

Recent reports have shown a five-fold increase in card fraud over the last five years. There are now around 100,000 cases of identity theft each year, totalling £1.3 billion.

RBS's new scheme helps to repair customers' credit ratings after they fall foul of card fraud and is available on any personal finance products, not just those offered by RBS.

Iain Clink, the managing director at RBS Cards Business, said: "Something as simple as a utility bill is all that is needed for somebody to steal your identity, so it's no wonder people are worried about it."

Mr Clink went on: "The cost burden and inconvenience to the individual for recovering their identity make it relevant for the card issuer to provide its customers with a service that provides assistance, appropriate levels of insurance and financial protection."

He concluded: "Research shows that when people realise the size and growth of identity fraud, they are shocked at the lack of assistance and advice available to victims".
