Sainsburys Finance highlights affordability issues relating to pets

Consumers are finding it harder to come up with the money to treat their pets when they become ill, research by Sainsburys Finance has shown.

A study by the company showed that over the past five years 56 per cent of vets have had to put an animal down because their owners did not have the cash to pay for an operation.

Sainsburys Finance pet insurance manager Lucy Hunter pointed out that it does not take much imagination to picture a situation in which money becomes an issue and it is a struggle to afford veterinary invoices.

"For most of us it would be unimaginable to take the decision not to go ahead with a course of treatment, or worse still, end a much beloved pet's life," she added.

This week, NFU Mutual urged dog owners to keep their canines on leads when going past icy waterways, in order to avoid needing to risk their lives to rescue their animal companions.
