People needing debt relief suffer emotional distress, says CCCS

The emotional distress suffered by people experiencing money worries has been highlighted by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).

Una Farrell, spokeswoman for the organisation, claimed such issues go "hand in hand" and more needs to be done to support individuals being affected in this way.

She called for further research to be carried out in the area and claimed the CCCS has been investigating the problem.

Ms Farrell stated that a lot of consumers who go to the organisation to get help with their financial difficulties experience emotional distress.

With regards to the impact of the recession on the British public, she remarked: "I think the problems have always been there, but obviously we have seen a huge increase in people coming to us with problems with debt."

This week, the CCCS launched its Debt Remedy service - developed with the aid of the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University - to help people cope with the emotional anguish of debt.
