Saga says insurance for young drivers is resulting in more claims

Younger motorists are to blame for the increased number of claims being received by insurance providers in recent weeks, according to Saga.

The company cited statistics showing the over-50s have had fewer accidents in December compared with the same month in 2009.

Director general of Saga Dr Ros Altmann described the figures as encouraging, adding: "Older motorists are using their experience and planning around the bad weather to ensure they are not out on the roads in the ice and snow."

The firm revealed that the number of insurance claims put in by drivers over 50 has fallen by 17 per cent and concluded that it must be young motorists who are having most of the accidents.

Her comments were made in response to AA research indicating the quantity of claims received by the insurance provider has doubled recently.

The motoring organisation noted that the snow and ice has been a factor in 71 per cent of submissions.
