People should shop around for savings accounts, says moneysupermarket.com

Many savers may not be receiving a competitive return on their funds if they have been signed up to a product for more than one year, a spokesperson from moneysupermarket.com has claimed.

Paul Lawler suggested it pays to look at what else is on the market in relation to any financial product.

In his view, a person could probably switch to a more competitive rate after they have been with their savings account provider for 12 months.

Mr Lawler suggested there is a degree of apathy about the situation, with many consumers believing it is not worth the effort of shopping around.

"Energy is a great example. Most people never switch their energy provider and end up paying £300 or £400 more for their energy every year," the moneysupermarket.com representative remarked.

Recent research by Sainsburys Finance showed 33 per cent of individuals taking out a personal loan received just one quote before accepting a deal.
