Which? criticises savings accounts providers

Recent fines given to the Royal Bank of Scotland and Natwest are further signs of banks not giving customers adequate service, according to consumer group Which?.

Chief executive of the group Peter Vicary-Smith said the fine appears to show that instead of taking complaints from customers seriously, both banks "have been paying lip service to the process".

He claimed that, through this, the banks have been causing inconvenience to customers and "systematically rejecting complaints they should have been upholding".

According to Mr Vicary-Smith, the customers service failings are made more difficult to accept when you consider how much of the banks are actually owned by the taxpayer following a number of bailouts.

Consumer Focus recently said that when calling a bank, customers should be able to accept "prompt" action. Commenting on recent fines, it said the financial penalties show UK banks to be "a long way off" where they should be.
