Director general of the company Dr Ros Altmann observed that some commentators have suggested allowing workers to stay in employment for longer will take jobs away from young people.
She said this is not the case, since the additional spending capability of older staff will mean more jobs in the UK, which may not have been supported without their contributions as consumers.
Dr Altmann remarked that that the default retirement age should have been ditched years ago, adding: "Most people are not old at 65 anymore - they are not ready for the scrapheap, work-wise. So why would we want to waste their skills?"
Following the government's decision on the issue, employment relations minister Edward Davey described the outgoing policy as a form of "age discrimination".
