Independent survey lauds HSBC mortgages

An independent survey carried out by Which? has found that HSBC mortgages hold the second-fewest fees of all UK providers.

With four different types, the company finished just behind Stafford Railway Building Society, which has just three distinct charges on home finance products.

Head of mortgages at HSBC Stuart Beattie highlighted how customers do not have to pay any fees that do not appear in the sale documents for their home, which he suggested is a testament to transparency at the firm.

"Once a customer completes their mortgage with HSBC there are no further fees during the life of the loan," he added.

The lender with the most different fees was Newcastle Building Society with 29, followed closely by Ipswich, Coventry, West Bromwich and Leek United building societies.

Which? money editor James Daley observed how the number of mortgage fees charged by financial institutions makes it harder for consumers to work out which is the best product for them.
