Gordon Morris, managing director of the charity, made his comments after the organisation announced the launch of its Equity Release Advice Service.
He pointed out that people work hard all their lives to pay off their mortgages, often so they can leave their properties for their children.
However, Mr Morris noted that Age UK's new service can help individuals to release small sums of money that will make a real difference to pensioners.
"Many people reach retirement and realise that the state pension will not provide the comfortable lifestyle that they had hoped for," he added.
Last month, industry organisation SHIP stated that advances in the equity release market decreased by eight per cent in the fourth quarter of 2010, with the weather blamed for low levels of transactions.
