Vince Smith-Hughes, a spokesperson for the firm, suggested the strategy has been in the ascendency since at least 2007.
He claimed that many individuals do not see it as a "disaster" that they must continue to work beyond the traditional retirement age.
In his opinion, the intellectual and social challenges of being in employment are valued by such savers.
"The only realistic option for people who want to avoid having to continue to work beyond the traditional retirement age, is to save more and to start saving earlier," added Mr Smith-Hughes.
His remarks were made after Prudential published research indicating 62 per cent of savers who had planned on retiring this year might work for longer.
Last month, the company revealed that one in five people reaching retirement in 2011 will carry some form of debt with them into their post-employment lives.
