Clydesdale Bank 'should treat mortgage customers fairly'

Consumer Focus has suggested Clydesdale Bank should refund mortgage customers who were affected by a recent miscalculation fiasco.

Mike O'Connor, chief executive of the consumer organisation, explained that any bank that wants a reputation for being trustworthy has to do right by their clients in situations like this.

He said: "Clydesdale Bank must now stand up and do the right thing for anyone who has been asked to make up shortfalls caused through no fault of their own."

The lender miscalculated the mortgage payments of 18,000 customers and then raised their costs in the ensuing months to recover the shortfall.

Clydesdale Bank apologised but continued with their policy of trying to make up the money with higher bills, despite the Financial Ombudsman Service deciding this type of mistake should be covered by the bank itself.

Last week, Consumer Focus issued a note of concern regarding the Department of Work and Pensions' decision to distribute benefits cheques via Paypoint instead of Post Offices.
