Nationwide rep lauds benefits of fixed rate mortgages

Consumers have been advised by a Nationwide representative to consider a fixed rate mortgage if they believe interest rates are going to increase soon.

Martyn Dyson, mortgage specialist at the lender, pointed out that such products will offer a degree of stability and can also help customers with budgeting.

"If people think the base rate is going to rise very soon then clearly fixed rate mortgages might be a good option because they can provide certainty," he said.

In his opinion, it is important for individuals to speak to their mortgage advisor about their future home finance needs, since there is a wealth of options available and consumers could end up saving money.

Mr Dyson encouraged people who want to hedge their bets regarding a base rate rise to consider a tracker deal.

His comments were made after Moneyfacts announced that tracker mortgage interest rates have fallen to their lowest ever level, with the average two-year arrangement currently at 3.4 per cent.
