Dr Ros Altmann, director general of the company, explained that it is important for people not to finish their working lives with major debts.
"Pay off your debts as soon as you can, but don't leave yourself without any money. If you can downsize your property to release some capital that would make sense," she said.
In her view, owing money on a home is not as much of a concern as credit cards or other high-interest loans, but it is still a worry.
She urged people to see a financial professional about the best way to handle their finances, since there may be some way to restructure their debts or pay them off using a lump sum from pension savings.
Her remarks follow research by Saga indicating 23 per cent of over-55s do not expect to have cleared their debts until they are at least 75.
