Financial advisors have a significant opportunity to gain new customers in relation to 'at retirement' choices, according to a source from Defaqto.

Matt Ward, wealth management consultant at the research organisation, explained that the significance of the topic at hand makes it a good area about which to approach consumers.

"The day someone retires represents one of the most important decision-making points of their life and a period when they need the most financial guidance," he said.

In his opinion, it is vital to be able to offer a cost-effective retirement plan and explain any regulatory reforms hitting the industry.

According to research by Defaqto, 44 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds have made an effort to find professional help when it comes to their pensions and long-term savings strategy.

This month, the organisation revealed that 21 per cent of independent financial advisors had changed their pension provider in the past year, with the majority doing so because they did not feel they were getting value for money.
