Unison survey reveals nurses will take action over pensions calculator

Findings from a new survey rep have revealed nurses are willing to take industrial action to protect their pensions.

Statistics from the study found that 73 per cent of the nurses questioned would be prepared to take action against proposed cuts.

This comes after NHS employees reacted with anger following plans to review the current system as part of the Hutton Review.

Despite the fact that half of women employed by the service retire on pensions of less than £3,500 per year, the government has proposed a number of recommendations.

Increasing the retirement age is currently under consideration by politicians, as well as changing to a career average rather than a final salary scheme.

Unison's head of health Christina McAnea said: "Asking workers to pay more into their pensions for less benefits, especially at a time when they are being hit by a pay freeze and inflation, is a real kick in the teeth."

This news comes after the coalition government came under fire for announcing plans to raise the state pension age for women before the agreed 2020 deadline, Channel 4 News reports.
