Saga urges government to rethink plans for pension calculator

Saga has urged the coalition government to rethink plans for pensions after frantic campaigners begged for a fairer future.

The organisation has voiced its support for the increase in the retirement age. However, it has criticised the timescale put forward by the coalition.

Saga has received a high number of complaints from women who feel they have been treated unacceptably as part of the legislation change.

As a result of the outcry, the charity has proposed a number of changes to the government's recent decisions to ensure no one is treated unfairly.

Ensuring no woman faces an extra pension rise of more than a year in order to provide adequate notice and allow more saving time was one suggestion from Saga.

The government could also ensure Pension Credit remains available to those in line with the current pension age timetable to protect vulnerable people from the impact of increases.

Quality of life for people over 50 years old has declined over the past three months, according to the most recent Saga Quarterly Report.

The study associated the findings with an overall drop in living standards - with people in their 50s most prominently affected.
