BIBA supports insurance signposting system

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has voiced its support for government proposals to launch a signposting system.

Aiming to increase the chance of older people finding the required insurance, politicians have called for an end to age discrimination regarding the handing out of services.

As part of the Government Equalities Office (GEO) consultation paper, the proposals call for people who have been refused coverage as a result of their age to receive guidance until they find an appropriate provider.

BIBA reports that approximately 34 per cent of enquiries received by its Find a Broker call centre are age-related and has called for better access to financial services for older people.

Head of corporate affairs for BIBA Graeme Trudgill acknowledged the difficulty many customers experience when selecting insurance because they are unaware of "where to find it if they have been rejected from a particular provider such as their bank or a comparison site, because not all providers cover all age".

The GEO recently reported the European Commission's plans to provide funding for activities to raise awareness of the European community's anti-discrimination agenda.
