Pension provisions 'still consistently low'

Almost half of people who should be saving money for after retirement are failing to take appropriate measures to ensure financial stability, according to Scottish Widows.

As part of its seventh annual Pensions Report, the investment company has revealed that 49 per cent of individuals do not have adequate provisions for when they stop working.

Its research also found that one-fifth of people have refrained from making any savings at all for when they reach retirement age.

The figures have emerged despite 73 per cent of respondents acknowledging the importance of retirement planning.

Ian Naismith, head of pensions market development for Scottish Widows, said: "This year's report clearly illustrates the stark difficulty we face in helping people to recognise the urgent need to take personal responsibility for their future."

This news comes after the company revealed that 35 per cent of the British public admitted to neglecting their finances, with 25 per cent attempting to ignore their money worries.
