Independent travellers may not be covered by insurance policies, Defaqto reveals

Youngsters contemplating taking a trip to visit family members in the upcoming months could be interested in new figures released by Defaqto.

The financial research company revealed that only 50 per cent of travel insurers will provide cover for children who are travelling alone.

Despite a number of travel policies acknowledging youths as insured, researchers discovered that many firms refute this when children travel without their parents.

In addition, seven per cent of companies do not provide any cover for individuals taking journeys on their own.

Mike Powell, Defaqto's insight analyst for general insurance, said: "If you or your children are planning to travel independently, it is essential to check the policy wording to ensure that the cover meets your needs."

The company recently reported a 23 per cent growth in the number of travel insurance policies available to consumers since 2008.

Defaqto expressed concern that the increase in choice could lead to customer confusion over selecting the best deals.
