NAEA urges fixed rate mortgage customers to look north

First-time buyers could have more luck getting on to the property ladder by moving to the north of England from the south, according to a source from the National Association of Estate Agents.

Richard Horner, northern south sector regional executive for the organisation, urged anyone who has the chance to move their job further up the country to do so, as they will have a better chance of finding a home they can afford.

He said: "Affordability is better in the north for first-time buyers. The main issue will be whether then can secure employment."

But he pointed out that jobs are currently a problem all over the country, so it is just a question of whether people can find a position outside of the south of England.

According to research by the Council of Mortgage Lenders, lending to first-time buyers was significantly up in April 2011, rising by eight per cent compared with the previous month.
