Car insurance prices under investigation by MPs

Motorists struggling to keep up with sky-rocketing car insurance costs could benefit from government plans to investigate the issue.

Following further rises to premiums, MPs have announced intentions to reopen an inquiry in a bid to help cash-strapped drivers.

Originally launched in March, the investigation is set to explore the reasons behind the increases, as well as their impact on the nation's vehicle owners.

During the process, former home and foreign secretary Jack Straw will give evidence on the implications of the ongoing issue affecting millions across the UK.

"Jack Straw's research is a powerful contribution to the debate and as well as hearing what he has to say, I will want to hold the insurance industry and the government to account", remarked committee chair Louise Ellman.

Plans to launch the inquiry emerged followed statistics from AA Insurance, which revealed a 29.9 per cent increase to premium costs in 2010.
