More drivers 'staging crashes to claim car insurance'

Increasing numbers of UK motorists are inventing car crashes in a bid to claim money on their insurance, according to new research.

As part of a new study, price comparison website moneysupermarket.com revealed that one in 20 drivers under the age of 35 admitted they had falsely reported an accident.

In addition, findings showed that 1.3 million cash-strapped vehicle owners would be willing to deliberately cause a motor accident, or invent one, to claim back funds.

Car insurance expert Peter Harrison urged drivers to think sensibly about the dangerous implications of fraudulent declarations.

"We have all been affected by the recession in one way or another, but crashing for cash is not only illegal but wilfully endangers the lives of others," he added.

Earlier this month, moneysupermarket.com acknowledged the difficult situation for homeowners following the Bank of England's decision to leave the base rate at 0.5 per cent for the 28th month in a row.
