Legal and General poll reveals three key guidelines for investing

A recent poll of independent financial advisers (IFAs) has highlighted the three most important areas people should consider when choosing to invest.

The What Matters Investment Index study, conducted by Legal and General Investments, found that 27 per cent of IFAs regard the name behind the investment - the fund manager - as the most important aspect when choosing a fund.

A fund's cost and its provider were shown to be the successive most pressing issues at 23 and 21 per cent respectively. While 45 per cent of IFAs believe that the level of commission charged is inconsequential.

Simon Ellis, managing director of Legal and General Investments, cautioned against over reliance on a fund manager's reputation and said that it was "short sighted".

Moreover, he added: "Staying with a manager out of blind loyalty is something to be avoided."

Legal and General offers a range of investment and fixed-rate bonds, annual funds and a variety of trusts and is responsible for managing over £310 billion for its customers.
