Sainsbury's sees 43% increase in lost or stolen holiday possessions

British holidaymakers lost £24 million in money and possessions while on holiday between 2009 and 2010, according to figures released by Sainsbury's Finance today (August 16th).

This accounted for a rise of 43 per cent in insurance claims over the 12-month period, the company's travel insurance service claimed.

Holidaymakers in Spain seemed far more likely to be victims as 27.6 per cent of all claims originated from the Iberian country. France came second with just 7.8 per cent.

Sainsbury's Travel Insurance manager David Barrett commented: "Lost or stolen money, baggage and possessions are a common problem for Britons on holiday.

"Over the past three years the average claim value for lost or stolen money was nearly £170."

The figures come after Marks and Spencer argued that 40 per cent of British holidaymakers were not budgeting adequately enough for their summer breaks, leaving them open to the risk of over-spending, despite the squeeze on household budgets.
