Safer standards of electricity 'could be encouraged by insurers'

Insurers could foster greater electrical safety by offering discounts for safer homes, an expert has argued.

Despite lapses in the standard of household electrics accounting for 50 per cent of all domestic fires, home insurance providers are not offering incentives to either private property owners or landlords to improve standards of safety in the home.

"On the face of it you want insurers to have a role to play, but unfortunately there isn't enough of a premium in domestic insurance for it to currently be worthwhile," said Cherry Read, head of communications and campaigns at the Electrical Safety Council (ESC).

Ms Reid added that there was some possible incentive available to landlords, as the amount of properties meant premiums could be large enough for insurers to take an interest. Consultations between the ESC and the Scottish government suggested this was a viable option.

Meanwhile, Churchill Home Insurance has advised people to check the terms of their policies as the price of gold continues to rise and the number of burglaries shows an increase of 14 per cent on the same period in 2009.
