Grandparents 'are good money management role models'

More than a third of people think that their grandparents are good role models when it comes to managing personal finances, a study from National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has found.

The same survey claimed that many people over 65 hold what turned out to be the mistaken belief that their advice was not wanted, while the NS&I study also showed how more than one in ten people aged between 16 and 34 years old (1.7 million) had no savings in place at all.

NS&I's savings spokesperson John Prout said: "We feel it's important people share their experiences and we are encouraging all generations to talk openly about finances and help each other plan for the future."

SaveOurSavers.co.uk's Simon Rose claimed the research showed a pressing need to continue with widespread pensions reform as savings continued to be depressed through low interest rates and rising inflation.

Mr Rose also called on the government to redress the banking system to favour savers rather than borrowers by scrapping income tax on savings interest.
