First-time buyers 'need help from government'

The intensity with which first-time buyers are struggling to get on to the property market means the government should intervene, an expert has argued.

Katy John, of the national campaign for affordable house prices, PricedOut.org.uk, said that availability of mortgages was only part of the solution to the lack of new buyers on the property ladder.

Ms John added that while the body is encouraging people to save in order to get the best deals possible, the government "needs to focus on the longer term objectives of building more houses".

She said the coalition must "[continue] with its planning reforms to free up more land to build on" and ensure that it does not repeat the "mistakes" seen during the last housing market price boom.

Last week, independent financial researcher Defaqto claimed that there is a varied choice of mortgage products on the market that represent significant savings to the consumer, compared to when interest rates were first lowered to 0.5 per cent in 2009.
