Consumers 'should attempt to save'

Individuals across the UK should attempt to put money aside whenever they can in order to build up a nest egg that could see them through hard times, it has been claimed.

Andrew Hagger, spokesman for Moneynet.co.uk, said Brits need to ensure they are paying all their essential bills each month - such as mortgages, council tax, energy bills and food - but they should also look to put any extra cash into savings.

He commented: "That would be a good strategy, although unfortunately some people just would not have enough money left to do that."

Mr Hagger added that the level of essential spending is increasing, but many Brits have seen pay freezes in recent years meaning they have less disposable income and less that they can afford to save each month.

According to research from unbiased.co.uk, up to 35 million Brits are currently worried about their financial situation.
