Borrowings 'still need to be repaid' during a gap year

Individuals taking a gap year, be it from work or education, must remember that their borrowings must still be paid during this period, a financial expert has advised.

Paul Lewis, vice president of Credit Confidential, said people need to remember the general advice of effective budgeting and ensuring they do not let any prior financial commitments fall by the wayside while they are enjoying their year out, as this could have serious consequences upon their return.

He commented: "It's very easy for someone not used to having a credit card to forget to pay for a couple of months, while very rapidly black marks are being added to their credit history."

Mr Lewis added that these sanctions can be very hard to remove further down the line and can stay with a person for many years.

According to research from Standard Life, Brits continue to spend more than they save, with UK adults on average putting £317 per month on plastic, while putting aside just £140 per month into savings.
