Setting goals 'helps Brits to save'

Individuals hoping to put aside more money for their retirement or who are simply looking to build a nest egg for a rainy day have been advised that setting short-term goals can be a more effective method of saving.

According to a study by NS&I, those who set small goals save an extra £40 per month than those who do not - the equivalent of an extra £500 per year.

However, less than a third of Brits (29 per cent) currently say they have a savings goal.

"Setting small achievable objectives, such as bringing coffee to work in a flask and making a tasty packed lunch instead of buying lunch, are easy ways to make considerable savings and increase long-term financial security," NS&I savings spokesperson John Prout commented.

Martin Bamford, chartered financial planner at Informed Choice, recently noted that Brits are currently faced with a difficult choice - either leave their savings in cash and suffer capital erosion or place the funds in higher risk assets, but face the prospect of possible losses due to the unstable market.
